Be Part Of The Solution

Let’s listen. And then let’s act.

A magazine about kindness can feel irrelevant in these dark days. While putting the finishing touches on this issue, our fragile world fell apart with the senseless killing of George Floyd.

I thought about throwing in the towel and scrapping the issue. The last thing folks would want is a magazine taunting them with the empty promise of ‘Better Days Are Here.’ Really? How much better off are we as a pandemic continues to rage and innocent black people are killed by the police?

Then I thought back to the weeks after 9/11. Reading books and magazines were the two things that got me through some woeful times. To disconnect from the news and lose myself, I would flip through pages of pretty pictures. It provided the smallest of reliefs from a grim world.

It’s with that spirit I chose to finish the issue. I thought, ‘Maybe this would be someone’s escape from the headlines.’ If it is, thanks for spending some time with me.

I’ve channeled my nights and weekends into issue 2. It has kept me going and let me focus on making something I think is quite useful and handsome. As you scroll through the issue, you’ll see the magazine is organized into four sections: Do, Tips, Self, and Make. These categories are the tent poles of The New Maturity

However, at the core of every issue are little things you can do to be kind to yourself. That is my part of the solution. I’ve been trying to be still and listen to my heart. It has helped center me. I know how to act and what my next steps will be. It hasn’t been easy. Taking a break from social media has helped. Since it’s Pride Month, I’m doing something I’m incredibly proud of: staying positive and kind. Here’s to better days ahead and a magazine that might help you lead the way.
