Warm Morning Hugs

This winter wonder of a beverage is a knock-out way to start your day.

My usual a.m. beverage is a smoothie. Toss some frozen fruit and almond milk in the blender, give it a whirl, and off you go. But for winter I wanted to change things up. Earlier this year I was introduced to Jasmine Hemsley via the Goop podcast. She was raving about golden milk. I had heard about turmeric lattes which sounded kind of bland to me.

The challenge I gave myself: how could I make it taste better? After multiple weekend sessions with my slow cooker, I’m excited to present my take on golden milk!

A note about turmeric: there are all kinds of wild medial claims made about this wonder spice. My advice is to do your homework. This story in the NYT was interesting and helped put things in a better perspective. Whichever way you lean, just know it’s a yummy beverage and a nice way to start your day.

The New Maturity Milk

  • 1 32 oz (1 qt.) unsweetened vanilla almond milk

  • 1 cinnamon stick

  • 1 star anise

  • 5 cloves

  • 5 Allspice balls

  • 1 tsp. turmeric

  • 1/2 tsp. ground cloves

  • Dusting of ground pepper

Combo all ingredients in the slow cooker. Stir. Let cook overnight for 7 hours. Strain to remove larger spices. Serve warm with a tablespoon of honey

Make sure you serve the beverage warm and not scalding hot. That way you can take long sips on it while reading a book.
