Mature Memo

Perfecting your lazy Sunday morning.

I love a Sunday morning ritual. Mine comes from a fondness for print. It involves a walk to the mailbox at the end of my driveway to retrieve a blue bag. A newspaper is stuffed inside. In an era of news alerts on your phone, this act of print devotion seems downright rebellious.

However, there is more than clinging to a print vestige of the 20th century to this story. It’s all about the rituals of quiet time on a Sunday morning. Once back inside the house, I remove the paper from its protective wrap. The sections are organized into four piles: mine, his, mutual, recycling.

Meanwhile in the background a pot of coffee is being made. Water is boiled for tea. The dining room table is cleared to make way for the mess that comes with a multi-sectioned breakdown of the week. There is also a small notebook and pencil. I use this to jot down ideas or things to follow up on when I’m in front of my computer. Sure, it might be easier to take notes on my phone. However, that can turn into a giant time suck and can take me down so many paths. For the next hour and a half, I want to get lost in the print stories of the week.

Now I’m at my optimal Sunday morning. Seated at the head of my dining room table I begin to read. Notes are taken. Recipes are torn out to follow up on later. A section or two is saved so I can read it later in the week. By around 11:00 it’s time to start on breakfast. The outstretched sections of the paper are corralled into a tidy pile and cleared. The table is set. A mellow Peggy Lee album hits the turntable. With this foundation set, I know the week is off to a great start
